Help for Transitioning From Health Disparity to Health Equity

beyond Oncology is committed to providing nurses with diversity, inclusion, and equity education. We believe that healthcare should be EQUALLY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL, regardless of race, ethnicity, education, ability, location, income, or other factors. Gaps in healthcare are everywhere, and it is vital to cancer care that every member of the cancer care team be informed on how to address these gaps.

As nurses, we work with people from diverse backgrounds on a daily basis. Clinical knowledge of how to assess, plan, and implement measures to help high-risk patients is only part of the puzzle—you also need to understand how socioeconomic factors might affect your patient. Specifically, you need to identify factors that are contributing to health disparities for your patients so you can work toward removing barriers to move toward health equity.

Our goal at beyond Oncology is to grow a more diverse team of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and gender minorities and to focus on social determinants of health (SDOH) to improve a patient’s perceived self-efficacy. We engage patient advisors so that all our work is “Nothing About Us, Without Us.”
